[Book Review] Silverblind by Tina Connolly

Silverblind (Ironskin #3)Silverblind
The final book in this series will jump forward 18 years and feature Dorie, Jane's young charge from Ironskin.

18 years later . . .
Dorie Rochart has been hiding her fey side for a long time. Now, finished with University, she plans to study magical creatures and plants in the wild, bringing long-forgotten cures to those in need. But when no one will hire a girl to fight basilisks, she releases her shapechanging fey powers--to disguise herself as a boy.

While hunting for wyvern eggs, she saves a young scientist who's about to get steamed by a silvertail-- and finds her childhood friend Tam Grimsby, to whom she hasn't spoken in seven years. Not since she traded him to the fey. She can't bear to tell him who she really is, but every day grows harder as he comes to trust her.

The wyverns are being hunted to extinction for the powerful compounds in their eggs. The fey are dying out as humans grow in power. Now Tam and Dorie will have to decide which side they will fight for. And if they end up on opposite sides, can their returning friendship survive?

Silverblind is the third book in the Ironskin series. Since I received this book for review and haven't read the first two books, I still enjoyed it as a standalone. Through the book you're able to understand Dorie's history and her past which was very helpful.

Dorie is half human/half fey but she's been trying to put her fey side away for years. Now that she's trying to get a job at Queen's Lab for field work to study wyverns and basilisks. The only problem is that noone wants to hire a woman so it forces her to use her fey powers to change into a man, Dorian. While starting work for Queen's Lab, she discovers the horrible truth about why wyrens' eggs are so popular and why every single person wants them. Now that she has her cousin Tam on her side (who still doesn't know that she is his cousin), they will try to help ironskins, people who were the victims in Human vs. Fey battle that ended years ago.

A lot of reviews that I've read said that it is important that you read first two books. Well I didn't do that and think that I was still keeping up with the story. This is why I really liked it because you can still see how amazing Dorie is. She knows that because of her fey side, she has the stunning looks but she doesn't care about that. She doesn't want people to look at her and think she's only a subject. She wants to be out on the field to actually study and work. The book is a little on the slow pace but it is still entertaining. Plus, the author manages to create a perfect steampunk world with just elements of fey that do play a big role but also keep the reader in the reality.

[Book Review] Zac and Mia by A.J. Betts

Zac and MiaZac and Mia
by
The Fault in Our Stars meets Eleanor and Park in this tough and tender young adult novel that's a lot about love (and a little about cancer).

Winner of the 2012 Australian Text Prize

"When I was little I believed in Jesus and Santa, spontaneous combustion, and the Loch Ness monster. Now I believe in science, statistics, and antibiotics." So says seventeen-year-old Zac Meier during a long, grueling leukemia treatment in Perth, Australia. A loud blast of Lady Gaga alerts him to the presence of Mia, the angry, not-at-all-stoic cancer patient in the room next door. Once released, the two near-strangers can't forget each other, even as they desperately try to resume normal lives. The story of their mysterious connection drives this unflinchingly tough, tender novel told in two voices.

Not completely buying the The Fault In Our Stars comparison, I tried to keep an open mind before starting to read Zac and Mia. With cancer subject, this was a lot more about friendship and less about romance. It was more about raw emotions and the process of being ill than about personal life.

"I don't deserve an award. I'm not a fighter and I'm probably not very brave. I haven't saved a kid from drowning, or sailed around the world. Playing three hours of Xbox a day doesn't make me a hero..."

The two main characters in this book are Zac & Mia (as you probably figured) who both have cancer and trying to beat it. It's interesting to see their reaction and their adaptation towards cancer. Zac is very down to Earth and always looks at times on the bright side. Even though he doesn't have high survival rate, he knows that it's just temporary and wants to enjoy life. Mia, on the other hand, is in denial and doesn't want to believe that she has cancer. Still hanging on to that believe that she will be back to her social life, she is trying not to think about it.

Mia was a very difficult character here. She's arrogant, lashes out on everyone who tries to get close to her and is being very rude towards Zac. I honestly cridged when she was talking just because I didn't want to hear it. But as the story progresses, she changes and really turns around. The concept of this book is having hope and accepting the changes. And it is brilliant.

I received this book free from  Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This did not influence my opinion in any way.

[Book Review] Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes

Broken MonstersBroken Monsters
by
New York Times bestselling author Lauren Beukes returns with her next smash crossover thriller.
Detective Gabriella Versado has seen a lot of bodies. But this one is unique even by Detroit's standards; half-boy, half-deer, somehow fused. The cops nickname him "Bambi," but as stranger and more disturbing bodies are discovered, how can the city hold on to a reality that is already tearing at its seams?

If you're Detective Versado's over-achieving teenage daughter, Layla, you commence a dangerous flirtation with a potential predator online. If you are the disgraced journalist, Jonno, you do whatever it takes to investigate what may become the most heinous crime story in memory. If you're Thomas Keen, you'll do what you can to keep clean, keep your head down, and try to help the broken and possibly visionary artist obsessed with setting loose The Dream, tearing reality, assembling the city anew.

If Lauren Beukes' internationally bestselling The Shining Girls was a time-jumping thrill ride through the past, her BROKEN MONSTERS is the genre-redefining thriller about the horror of our city's future.

Definitely one of the creepiest works that I have ever read,Broken Monsters is meant to challenge the reader on psychological level, opening his eyes to the thin line between reality and something people consider as supernatural.

"The moment when it reveals its miracle boy and all the eyes will look and their seeing will be horror and glory and wonder and it will pierce the skin of the world, collapse dimensions, and open the doors and the work will breathe and dance in his shoes and the dream will be able to escape..."

From the beginning, it felt like a typical story of CSI & trying to unreveal the murders. A young boy found glued together with a deer was sick but with every detail and every explanation, I was in awe of the structure of this book. Written in different POVs, we are able to know what's going on inside of the head of Detroit Monster. The dream that possess over his head, actions, and memories.

It was intense and exactly what I would have considered as one of a kind reads. This is not a book that you can simply skip through. There are so many details, so many things that you have to consider, no wonder it took me awhile to read it. But it wasn't that I didn't like it. It was to actually process all of the information and give my imagination and mind a break from what I read. This is a talent. Broken Monsters was better than I expected and it intrigued me.

ARC was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
