[Book Review] Freak of Nature by Julia Crane

Freak of Nature (IFICS, #1)Freak of Nature
Julia Crane
Donate Body to Science. Check.
When seventeen-year-old Kaitlyn checked the box, she never suspected she’d have her life–and her body–stolen from her. She awakens one day in a secret laboratory to discover that her body is now half-robot and is forced to hide her own secret: that she still has human emotions and a human mind. If the scientists who made her find out, they’ll erase what remains of who she was.

Kaitlyn finds an unlikely ally in Lucas, a handsome, brilliant scientist who can’t get over the guilt he feels knowing she was once a vibrant, beautiful young woman. He never expected a science project to affect him the way she does. As he tries to help her rediscover her past, he finds himself falling for the brave girl struggling to find her place and acceptance between the human and computer worlds.

”I have so many chips implanted in me that I don’t know where I start and where the machine begins. Scars cover my body. How could you possibly think I’m beautiful? I’m repulsive – a freak of nature.”
Kaitlyn knew that the reason she was in this situation is because she checked the mark “donate body to science” on her driver license. But she has no memories and day after day she needs to improve her skills as a machine with upgrades and wires running through her body. She is a science project. A “super-human” who is being designed by a millionaire with a vision for better protection of our country and hopefully, a better future. Kaitlyn doesn’t know if having feelings and thoughts is okay but she is scared that the scientists will take away that from her as well. But she needs to hangout to her feelings for Lucas because it is the only thing that makes her still feel like a human.

When Lucas finds out about Kaitlyn ability to feel and think, it is almost too late. She is the only person who makes him want to be with someone and actually have conscious about the experiments that are going on. When they are at risk of handing Kaitlyn to the government, there is only one choice – to risk it all and hope for the best.

Julia Crane is a genius when it comes to different worlds and scientific projects. I loved reading about the system and all the abilities that Kaitlyn had and was a little bit jealous. Damn, take me and make me a super-human! I thought that the MC was likable and it was interesting to see how she was trying to be a human but some things were hard to realize. Like the time when she cried – that was a very emotional scene. Little details like that is what made this a very interesting read.

However, there were downside to the story. The ending was perfect and I wanted to know what is going to happen between Erik & Kate. But I still can’t grasp to what Harrison is up to. I want to know if the reason he agreed to the plan was because he has a different agenda underneath it or author just gave up on the story. He was portrayed as a very important man and it was just a little unbelievable how he ends up reacting to the situation. But that’s the only hint you guys will get :P

I would say that it was hard for me to decide what rating I should give to this story but 3.5 stars is where my heart at right now. My opinion about this series might definitely change depending on the second book. If you have time – read it. The story definitely has a lot of potential.
